Caring for Your Skin When Living With Incontinence
If you experience bladder or bowel leaks, your skin may be more vulnerable to irritation.
Those who experience incontinence often face increased exposure to moisture, friction, and bacteria, which can lead to soreness, dryness, or even infection if not managed carefully.
The right daily routine can help protect your skin and keep you comfortable.
Everyday skin care tips
- Change pads regularly – This helps keep the skin dry and reduces the risk of irritation. Quality incontinence pads are designed to draw moisture away from the skin, unlike sanitary pads, which can leave the area damp and uncomfortable.
- Clean gently but thoroughly – Use a soft cloth, wet wipes, or skin cleansing foam to remove any residue. Avoid harsh soaps, which can strip the skin’s natural barrier.
- Dry carefully – Pat the area dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing.
- Use a barrier cream – This creates a protective layer to shield the skin from moisture and friction. Barrier creams should be applied after every wash or pad change.
- Moisturise regularly – Hydrated skin is more resilient. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser.
If mobility is reduced
If washing at a sink or in the shower is difficult, there are alternatives that can make daily hygiene easier, especially for carers helping someone:
- Dry wash gloves – These gloves come pre-moistened and ready to use without water. Some even have barrier creams built-in.
- Shampoo caps – Complete with conditioner, these caps help you clean hair without the need for water for rinsing.
- No-rinse cleansing foams and creams – A perfect solution for when you’re travelling or mobility is limited, they help you cleanse and protect the skin in one step.
Watch for signs of irritation
If the skin becomes red, sore, or broken, seek advice from your GP or district nurse promptly. Early treatment can prevent more serious problems from developing.
Overall wellbeing
A balanced diet and drinking enough fluids can also support skin health from the inside, making it easier for your skin to recover and stay healthy.
